DT Internal Assessment

Internal Assessment Overview

The Internal Assessment (IA) in Design Technology comprises a significant part of the overall assessment, constituting 40% of the final grade. Students complete a design project, demonstrating application of knowledge, design skills, and problem-solving abilities. The IA is evaluated against specific assessment criteria, designed to guide students in a structured approach to design challenges.

Mark Bands:
0: Work does not meet standard
1–3: Limited analysis of the design opportunity
4–6: Satisfactory analysis with some clear objectives
7–9: Thorough analysis, effectively identifying relevant design needs

Mark Bands:
0: Work does not meet standard
1–3: Limited exploration of solutions, minimal concept modeling
4–6: Satisfactory modeling with limited analysis
7–9: Comprehensive modeling and analysis to guide development

Detailed exploration and refinement of the chosen concept to prepare for production
Mark Bands:
0: Work does not meet standard
1–3: Basic refinement without significant detail
4–6: Adequate detailing with some preparation for production
7–9: Extensive detailing with clear production steps

Testing and analyzing the final design solution based on the initial specifications
Mark Bands:
0: Work does not meet standard
1–3: Limited evaluation, insufficient testing
4–6: Satisfactory evaluation with moderate testing
7–9: Comprehensive testing with thorough evaluation against criteria

Evaluates the potential and actual impact of the design on various stakeholders and the environment, focusing on sustainability, ethics, and global contexts. This criterion encourages students to consider the broader implications of their designs beyond immediate functionality.

Mark Bands:
0: Work does not meet standard
1–3: Limited evaluation of potential impacts
4–6: Satisfactory evaluation with some focus on sustainability or ethics
7–9: Comprehensive evaluation of sustainability, ethical, and societal impacts

Assesses the clarity and effectiveness of the student’s presentation of the design process and outcome. Students must demonstrate their ability to communicate the design solution visually and verbally using various formats like sketches, CAD models, and written explanations.

Mark Bands:
0: Work does not meet standard
1–3: Limited clarity in communication, lacking cohesion
4–6: Adequate communication, with clear presentation but minimal depth
7–9: Highly effective communication, with well-integrated and professional presentation
